Tensions over Greenland are escalating as U.S. President Donald Trump issues a new warning despite polls showing 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S. In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Denmark of failing to counter a “Russian threat” on the island and suggested U.S. action may be necessary.
The warning followed Trump’s announcement of 10% tariffs on several European countries, set to begin Feb. 1 and remain in place “until Greenland becomes American.” The move triggered strong backlash across Europe, prompting emergency EU talks and warnings that the tariffs undermine transatlantic relations.
European leaders rejected U.S. pressure, stressing that NATO forces in Greenland pose no threat. Experts say the dispute marks one of the sharpest breaks between the U.S. and Europe since Trump’s return to office.
Republican Rep. Michael McCaul also criticized Trump’s rhetoric, warning that a military takeover of Greenland would violate NATO principles and could effectively dismantle the alliance.
