A neighbor described Alex Pretti, 37, as a “wonderful person” with a “great heart” amid online debates about his fatal shooting by ICE agents on January 24. Pretti, reportedly restrained and no longer a threat, was shot multiple times, sparking tensions in Minnesota less than a month after Renee Good’s killing.
The Trump administration and DHS claim Pretti approached officers with a firearm, though he had a permit and may have been disarmed before being shot. A U.S. citizen from Illinois with no criminal record, Pretti was active in protests against ICE practices.
His father said he “cared about people deeply” and opposed injustice. The family condemned official statements claiming he attacked agents, noting videos showed him holding his phone while shielding a woman.
Neighbor Sue Gitar, who lived below him, recalled Pretti as helpful and reliable, surprised by reports he might carry a gun on the streets.
