Will & Grace actor dies at 95 as heartbroken son pays tribute

Veteran actor Charles C. Stevenson Jr., best known as bartender Smitty on Will & Grace, has died of natural causes on January 19 in Camarillo, California, his son confirmed. He was 89.

Stevenson appeared in 12 episodes across seven seasons of Will & Grace from 2002 to 2020, with his final appearance airing in February 2020. A longtime character actor, he built a career spanning decades, with film roles in The Naked Gun, Ed Wood, Men in Black, Pleasantville, and Ghost World, and TV appearances on shows including Cheers, L.A. Law, Murder, She Wrote, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Office, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Born in Piedmont, California, Stevenson served in the Navy during the Korean War, studied English at UC Berkeley, and later became an actor. He is survived by five children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
