Actor Tony Roberts has died at 85. His daughter, Nicole Barley, confirmed to The New York Times that he passed away Friday at his Manhattan home from complications of lung cancer. She was his only surviving family member.
Born October 22, 1939, in New York City and a graduate of Northwestern University, Roberts built a distinguished career across Broadway, film, and television. He was best known for his collaborations with Woody Allen in films such as Annie Hall, Play It Again, Sam, Manhattan, and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy, often playing the charming best friend. He also appeared in Sidney Lumet’s films, including Serpico and Just Tell Me What You Want.
On television, he had roles in series like The Love Boat, Law & Order, and Frasier. A respected stage actor, he earned Tony nominations for How Now, Dow Jones and Play It Again, Sam, and starred in Broadway productions including Barefoot in the Park and Victor/Victoria alongside Julie Andrews.
Roberts was also known for his distinctive voice work in audiobooks and commercials. Though widely accomplished, he remained devoted to his craft rather than the spotlight.
Rest in peace.
