Mitzi Gaynor has died peacefully of natural causes at 93, her management confirmed on October 17. She was best known for her movie musicals and television specials, especially her starring role in South Pacific.
Born Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber in Chicago in 1931, Gaynor was raised in a musical family and trained in dance after moving to Los Angeles. She rose to fame in the 1950s with musicals such as There’s No Business Like Show Business and The Birds and the Bees, but South Pacific became her most iconic success.
As Hollywood musicals declined in the 1960s, she transitioned to Las Vegas performances and acclaimed TV variety specials throughout the ’60s and ’70s. She frequently appeared on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, performing alongside major stars of the era.
Gaynor was married to talent agent Jack Bean from 1954 until his death in 2006. She is remembered as a vibrant performer who brought glamour, energy, and classic Hollywood charm to stage and screen.
