After losing her only son to cancer, Ana Obregón chose an unusual way to preserve his legacy by having a child conceived using her late son’s frozen sperm.
Her son, Aless Lequio García, was diagnosed in 2018 with a rare cancer and stored sperm before chemotherapy. He died in May 2020 after expressing his wish to have a child even if he wasn’t alive to raise it.
Following his death, Obregón began the surrogacy process, saying it was her son’s last wish. In 2023, she announced the birth of her granddaughter, Ana Sandra, conceived using her son’s sperm and a donor egg.
Obregón has described the child as “wanted from earth and heaven,” stating she will later tell her granddaughter about her father’s bravery and love. She has also said the child is legally her daughter but biologically her granddaughter, and that becoming a grandmother gave her a sense of rebirth after her son’s death.
