Meaning behind the ‘WC’ sign outside bathrooms

Posted on March 8, 2026 By admin

Have you ever noticed the letters WC outside a public bathroom and wondered what they mean? WC stands for “water closet,” a term used to describe a room containing a toilet.

Historically, homes had separate spaces for bathing and for the toilet. The toilet area was called a water closet, and the name stuck. Today, WC is simply another way of saying restroom or bathroom, commonly used in public places like airports, hotels, and restaurants.

Different countries use different terms—such as bathroom, restroom, washroom, lavatory, or loo—but they all refer to the same place. According to Merriam-Webster, a water closet is simply a small room or compartment that contains a toilet.

So if you see WC on a sign, don’t worry—it’s just another name for the bathroom. 🚻
