14-year-old Davi Nunes Moreira from Brazil died after taking part in a dangerous internet challenge in an attempt to gain attention online.
He injected a homemade mixture of crushed butterfly wings and water into his leg. What began as an attempt at online notoriety quickly turned into a severe medical emergency.
At first, he told his father he was injured playing, but later his condition worsened, with vomiting and difficulty walking. A syringe found under his pillow eventually led to his confession at the hospital.
Doctors believe the injection may have caused a fatal reaction such as infection, embolism, allergic response, or septic shock. He suffered for seven days before dying in February at a hospital in Planalto, Brazil.
Experts also warned that toxins from the butterfly or air trapped in the injection could have contributed to his rapid decline. An investigation is ongoing, with an autopsy expected to confirm the exact cause of death.
The case has raised further concern about viral online challenges, following other similar incidents in Brazil where young people have suffered life-threatening injuries from dangerous dares.
