Beloved character actor James Tolkan, best known for playing the strict Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future films, has died at 94. His death was confirmed by co-writer Bob Gale, who said Tolkan passed away peacefully at his home in New York.
Tolkan became famous for portraying tough authority figures, including Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy and Stinger in Top Gun alongside Tom Cruise. He also appeared in films like Serpico, WarGames, Prince of the City, and Love and Death.
Born in Wisconsin in 1931, Tolkan had a difficult childhood and briefly joined a gang before turning his life around. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he studied acting and built a long career in film, television, and theater, including Broadway’s Glengarry Glen Ross.
Even in later years, Tolkan remained close to fans and often reunited with his Back to the Future co-stars.
