Shania Twain may be a global superstar today, but her childhood was filled with poverty, abuse, and heartbreak. Growing up in Timmins, Ontario, she lived with little food, heat, or electricity while helping care for her siblings. Music became her escape, and she began singing in bars at just 8 years old while also working at McDonald’s to help support her family.
Behind the scenes, her home life was difficult and abusive. After her mother and stepfather died in a car crash when she was 22, Shania took responsibility for raising her younger siblings while continuing to perform to support them.
As her siblings grew older, she focused on her music career and eventually signed with Mercury Nashville, launching her rise to fame. She later married producer Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange, but their marriage ended after his affair with a close friend. Years later, Shania found love again with Frédéric Thiébaud, whom she married in 2011.
Despite battling Lyme disease and vocal cord issues, Shania embraced her challenges and continued her successful music career without bitterness toward her past.
