French-born singer and actress Claudine Longet, known for her marriage to Andy Williams and the 1976 shooting death of Olympic skier Spider Sabich, has died at 84. Her death was confirmed by her nephew, Bryan Longet, though no cause was released.
Longet rose to fame in the 1960s as a singer, actress, and TV personality after marrying Andy Williams in 1961. The couple became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable pairs and had three children before divorcing in 1975. She also released several popular albums and appeared in shows like McHale’s Navy and The Bold Ones.
Her career was overshadowed in 1976 when she fatally shot her boyfriend, Olympic skier Spider Sabich, in Aspen, Colorado. Longet claimed the gun accidentally fired while Sabich was showing her how it worked. The highly publicized case became a national media sensation, and she later pleaded no contest to criminally negligent homicide, serving a short sentence.
After the trial, Longet largely withdrew from public life and later settled in Aspen with attorney Ron Austin, who had represented her during the case.
