A Washington high school lacrosse standout has died after a routine play turned tragic during a college recruiting showcase.
Eliot Abramson, 17, a midfielder at Mercer Island High School near Seattle, was struck in the neck by a high-speed ball on June 1. The shot slipped under his helmet and caused him to collapse immediately on the field.
He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, underwent emergency surgery, and remained in intensive care for nearly a week. He died on June 7.
His mother, Jessica Abramson-Lott, shared a tribute remembering him as joyful and comforted by the belief he is now reunited with his late father.
His death has renewed concern about rare but serious injuries in lacrosse, a sport that has rapidly grown in popularity worldwide and is set to return to the Olympics in 2028.
