Obama’s brutal jab at Donald Trump after he freezes Harvard funding

It’s no secret that Donald Trump isn’t a fan of elite academic institutions — and Barack Obama isn’t shy about criticizing Trump either. At a recent speech at Hamilton College, Obama took a pointed swipe at Trump, saying, “I have deep differences of opinion with my most immediate successor — who’s now president once again,” adding that key government values have “eroded.”

Tensions have escalated between the Trump administration and Harvard University — Obama’s alma mater — after the Department of Education froze $2.3 billion in federal funding. The move came after Harvard refused to comply with demands to cut DEI programs, restrict protests, and overhaul hiring and admissions policies.

The administration claims the changes are to combat antisemitism, but Harvard President Alan Garber pushed back, stating the university “will not surrender its independence or its constitutional rights.”

Obama has now publicly backed Harvard, calling the administration’s move a “ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom.” He praised the university’s stance and urged others to follow its lead.

This clash has sparked a wider debate over who controls higher education — raising questions about academic freedom, political interference, and the role of federal funding.
