We believe wild animals, like chimpanzees, belong in the wild — not zoos. Even with the best care, they’re better off free.
Still, we had to share this incredible rescue. In 1990, at the Detroit Zoo, a chimp named Jo-Jo fell into a moat after being chased by another chimp. As he struggled to stay afloat, 33-year-old truck driver Rick Swope, visiting with his family, jumped into the enclosure to save him — ignoring danger and warning signs.
Chimpanzees are incredibly strong and unpredictable, especially in a high-stress environment. But Rick didn’t hesitate. After a tough struggle, he managed to pull the 200-pound Jo-Jo to safety.
“He was looking at me. I think he knew what was going on,” Rick later said.
Watch the heroic rescue — and share to honor Rick’s bravery!
