ABBA has paid tribute to longtime sound engineer Michael B. Tretow, who has died at the age of 80.
Known as the “fifth member” of ABBA, Tretow played a major role in creating the band’s legendary sound during their most successful years in the 1970s and early 1980s.
All four members of the group shared emotional messages honoring his memory and thanking him for his unforgettable contribution to their music.
Born in Sweden, Tretow began working with ABBA after meeting Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson at Metronome Studio. His innovative recording techniques, including layered vocals and creative effects, helped shape the group’s worldwide sound.
Beyond ABBA, he worked with other Swedish artists and contributed to projects such as the musical Chess.
Tretow stepped away from music after suffering a stroke in 2001. He is survived by his wife Malin Hertzman and son Rasmus Tretow.
