For five years, every time my in-laws visited, my mother-in-law Monica took over our bedroom.
She would move my things, spread out her makeup, light her strong candles, and treat our private space like her personal hotel room.
I tried asking nicely.
I tried setting boundaries.
Nothing worked.
My husband Jake always promised he would talk to her, but when Monica arrived, he became silent.
During their latest visit, I finally decided enough was enough.
Before they arrived, I told her:
“We’ve prepared the guest room for you. It’s clean, comfortable, and private.”
She ignored me.
Within minutes, she was unpacking in our bedroom again.
My skincare was pushed aside. Her luggage was on our bed. Her candles filled the room.
“The guest room gets too much sunlight,” she said. “You young people can adjust.”
I smiled.
“Of course. Whatever makes you comfortable.”
Jake looked confused.
He didn’t know I had a plan.
That night, Monica and Frank slept in our bedroom while Jake and I stayed in the guest room.
The next morning, Monica walked into the kitchen looking completely defeated.
She avoided eye contact.
Finally, she whispered:
“We’ll take the guest room. Please.”
I smiled.
“Oh? I thought you loved the master bedroom?”
She quickly replied:
“We changed our minds.”
Later, Jake asked what happened.
I showed him.
I had filled our bedroom with things that made it very clear it was our private space—not a guest room.
His jaw dropped.
“You’re evil,” he said.
I smiled.
“No. I’m just teaching a lesson about boundaries.”
When Monica left, she never asked for our bedroom again.
