Eric Dane Diagnosed with ALS
Beloved actor Eric Dane, 52, best known as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, has revealed he’s been diagnosed with ALS—a progressive, degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
The San Francisco native rose to fame in 2005 after a memorable guest role on Grey’s, eventually becoming a series regular. Dane, once a high school water polo player, discovered his passion for acting through a school play.
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane has starred in films like Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque. He currently plays Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria and will begin filming Season 3 despite his diagnosis.
“I’m grateful to have my loving family by my side,” Dane shared, asking for privacy as he faces this battle. He and wife Rebecca Gayheart share two daughters: Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, causes muscle weakness, slurred speech, and difficulty moving. Most patients live 2–4 years after diagnosis, though some, like Stephen Hawking, have lived much longer. Its causes remain largely unknown, though both genetics and environmental factors may play a role.
Sending strength and love to Eric and his family during this heartbreaking time.
