Respected Associated Press sports writer Howard Fendrich has died at 55 after a battle with cancer.
Fendrich, a trusted voice in sports journalism for more than three decades, passed away at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His wife, Rosanna Maietta, confirmed his death.
During his 33-year career with the AP, Fendrich covered 11 Olympic Games, around 70 Grand Slam tennis tournaments, and countless major sporting events. He was especially known for his thoughtful tennis coverage, documenting legends like Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
Colleagues remembered him as a journalist who valued accuracy, fairness, and humility. He avoided the spotlight and focused on telling the stories of athletes with honesty and care.
Fendrich leaves behind his wife, two sons, and a lasting legacy as one of sports journalism’s most respected writers.
