On my wedding day, my parents once again tried to make my older sister Emily the center of attention.
I was adopted as a child, and my whole life I was reminded that Emily was their “real” daughter. She always had the bigger room, the better gifts, and the spotlight—even on my own birthdays.
So when my mother said, “Emily should walk down the aisle first. It wouldn’t be fair for you to take all the attention,” I almost laughed.
But I didn’t fight.
Because Bryan and I had a plan.
On the wedding day, Emily arrived dressed like the bride, walking in with my parents while everyone watched.
Then the music stopped.
Bryan stepped forward and said:
“Before Anna walks down the aisle, there is one condition.”
The room went silent.
He looked at my family and said:
“Anna has spent her whole life standing behind someone else. Today, she will walk alone—not because she has no one, but because this is the last time she ever will.”
And for the first time in my life, I wasn’t being pushed aside.
I was finally chosen.
