San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from serious injuries after a car crash near his Northern California home earlier this month.
The July 14 collision left the 45-year-old coach with a severe concussion, broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand and facial injuries requiring 40 stitches. He was treated at a nearby hospital and released the same day.
The 49ers say Shanahan is recovering at home and making steady progress, but doctors have not yet cleared him to fully return to work.
As training camp begins, assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team’s coordinators will help oversee practices while Shanahan takes a limited role.
Police have released few details about the crash. Both drivers cooperated with investigators, and no citations were issued.
Despite the injuries, the 49ers remain optimistic Shanahan will return before the regular season begins. General manager John Lynch said the team’s priority is making sure he is fully healthy before returning.
Shanahan, who is entering his 10th season as San Francisco’s head coach, has established himself as one of the NFL’s top offensive minds. He has led the 49ers to multiple Super Bowl appearances and 82 regular-season victories.
The 49ers are scheduled to open their 2026 season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 11.
For now, the organization’s focus is simple: getting Shanahan healthy and back on the sideline when he is ready.
