Sam Elliott Says Decades of Hard Work Are Catching Up With Him at 81
Legendary actor Sam Elliott has opened up about the physical toll that decades of hard work have taken on his body.
In a recent interview with Variety, Elliott discussed his role as T.L. Norris in Landman and admitted that one emotional scene felt especially personal.
“The truth of it is, that scene is very true to where I am at this point in my life physically,” Elliott said. “I’ve had a hard life. I’ve been an athlete all my life, and I’ve been a laborer all my life, and I’m paying for it now.”
In the scene, T.L. struggles to pull himself out of a swimming pool and becomes emotional about his body failing him despite his mind remaining sharp.
At 81, Elliott says he knows he can no longer play the young leading man, but he remains grateful for meaningful roles.
“I’m not going to go out and play the young leading, dashing man at this stage,” he said. “The fact that there’s a part that I can get into and really enjoy doing, it’s a wonderful thing.”
With a career spanning more than six decades, Elliott remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors, known for films including The Big Lebowski, Road House, and A Star Is Born.
And despite the physical challenges of aging, he still loves being on set.
“He’s just happy to sit there and be a part of it and watch all of us perform,” co-star Kayla Wallace said.
