Former Sacramento State football player Ivan Garza has died at just 25 after being struck by a vehicle in his hometown of Delano, California.
Police said Garza was hit while crossing the street shortly after 4 a.m. on July 8. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Garza’s family has questioned the initial account and raised concerns about possible foul play, saying they believe he may have been walking near the sidewalk. Police have not released further details.
Garza was a Delano native and former Robert F. Kennedy High School football standout. He later played offensive line for Sacramento State from 2021 to 2023, starting all 13 games in his final season and earning honorable mention All-Big Sky honors.
His family remembered him as a “gentle giant” with a kind heart and infectious smile.
Sacramento State also paid tribute to the former Hornet, saying he would be remembered as a wonderful teammate, player and person.
His family is now raising support for funeral expenses as they mourn his sudden loss.
