Grandma’s fingers tightened around my wrist.
“Lock the front door,” she repeated.
The room fell silent.
I removed Sophie’s left sock as Grandma demanded. At first, I saw nothing unusual—just the small brown birthmark above her heel that had always been there.
But Grandma went pale.
“Turn her foot toward me.”
She stared at the mark, trembling.
Then she pointed at my uncle Dean.
“You stay where you are.”
Dean looked nervous.
Grandma reached for the old red suitcase and finally unlocked it. Inside were photographs, letters, a journal, and an old baby blanket.
One photograph showed a young woman holding a baby.
“Who is she?” I asked.
“My sister, Margaret.”
Grandma explained that Margaret had a daughter, Rose, who was taken away as a baby. She had spent years searching for her.
Then Grandma showed me another photograph.
The baby’s foot had the exact same birthmark as Sophie’s.
My heart stopped.
The documents inside the suitcase revealed an even bigger secret: Rose had grown up and eventually had a daughter—my mother.
My mother had been raised believing Grandma was her biological mother.
Dean had discovered the truth years earlier but hid it because of a family inheritance dispute.
Grandma looked at my mother and said, “Margaret couldn’t protect Rose. Rose couldn’t protect you. So I did.”
As my mother cried in her arms, Sophie suddenly smeared frosting across her face.
Everyone laughed through their tears.
