Tedde Moore, the beloved actress who played Miss Shields, Ralphie Parker’s teacher in the Christmas classic A Christmas Story, has died at 79.
The Canadian-born actress passed away on August 5, 2026, in Huntsville, Muskoka, surrounded by family. Her official cause of death has not been revealed, though Moore had battled multiple sclerosis since 2009.
Born in Toronto in 1946, Moore came from a prominent Canadian theater family. She built a long career in film, television, and theater, appearing in projects including Anne of Green Gables, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Virgin Suicides, and The Kennedys.
But for generations of viewers, she will always be remembered as Miss Shields—the teacher who gave Ralphie a C+ after reading his essay about wanting a Red Ryder BB gun and warned him:
“You’ll shoot your eye out!”
Moore returned to the role in My Summer Story and again in A Christmas Story Christmas in 2022.
She was also a mother of three and helped raise a foster daughter. Her family said she was surrounded by loved ones when she passed.
