Fire Captain & Family Killed in Utah Canyon — Daughter Survives

Posted on September 1, 2026 By admin

A Utah family of five tragically died after a sudden flash flood swept through a southern Utah canyon during a hiking trip.

The victims were identified as Provo Fire Department Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons, Reid, Thayne, and Gage. Their daughter, Lydia, was not on the trip and is the family’s only surviving child.

Authorities said the family was hiking near Sunglow Campground in Wayne County when heavy rain triggered a powerful flash flood. Search crews recovered the victims Friday night and Saturday.

The Provo Fire Department said it was “absolutely heartbroken” by the deaths of Captain Long and his family.

A GoFundMe has been created to support Lydia with funeral costs, counseling, education, housing, and other long-term needs. The fundraiser has received significant support from the community.

Katrina, co-founder of Summit Medical Spa, was remembered as a compassionate leader who touched countless lives.

The Long family leaves behind a grieving community and a daughter now facing an unimaginable loss.

Forever loved. Forever remembered.
