13-Year-Old Football Player Caden Sorrell Dies After Cardiac Arrest During Practice

Caden Sorrell, a 13-year-old middle school football player in Greensboro, North Carolina, has died after suffering cardiac arrest during practice.

Caden collapsed on Friday, Aug. 28, at Northwest Guilford Middle School after running a lap around the field. He was rushed to Cone Health, where doctors used intensive treatments, including ECMO and a heart pump, to try to save him.

Despite their efforts, Caden died Sunday, Aug. 30.

His family’s fundraiser says doctors believe a possible underlying genetic condition may have contributed to the cardiac arrest. His four siblings are expected to undergo medical testing.

Caden’s sister remembered him as a bright, caring boy who made everyone feel loved. He leaves behind his twin brother and three other siblings.

The school community has since created a memorial where students and families can leave flowers and messages.

A GoFundMe has also been launched to help the family with funeral costs, medical expenses and testing for Caden’s siblings. More than $32,000 has been raised toward a $50,000 goal.
