“…not your setting.”
I let those words sink in.
Then I made one phone call.
“James, flag the Patterson family reservation for owner review.”
An hour later, I returned to the resort.
My father was at the front desk demanding that my room be canceled.
“You can’t cancel that reservation,” I said calmly.
Before he could respond, the hotel director arrived.
“Mr. Patterson, I’m James Hendricks, Director of Operations.”
My father explained that my room should be removed.
James didn’t argue.
He simply turned to me.
“Miss Patterson, the reservation has been flagged for owner review. No changes can be made without direct authorization.”
My father frowned.
“And who is authorizing it?”
“The owner,” James replied.
Then he looked at me.
“Would you like to proceed with your stay?”
My mother’s face suddenly changed.
My brother stared at me.
My father demanded, “What is he talking about?”
I looked at him.
“The part of my life none of you ever asked about.”
James finally revealed the truth:
“Miss Patterson holds a controlling interest in the Grand View Resort group.”
Silence.
My father had just tried to throw me out of a resort I partly owned.
I picked up my suitcase.
“I’ll be staying for the week. And please keep my family’s reservations exactly as they are.”
“Of course.”
For the first time, my family had nothing to say.
