Beloved ‘Emergency!’ Star Dies at 80

Posted on September 12, 2026 By admin

Beloved actor Randolph Mantooth, best known as firefighter and paramedic John Gage on NBC’s Emergency!, has died at age 80 after a long illness, his family announced Friday.

Mantooth became famous on the hit 1970s series, which followed firefighters and paramedics responding to life-threatening emergencies in Los Angeles.

The show helped introduce millions of viewers to paramedicine and inspired many to pursue careers in EMS and firefighting. When Emergency! premiered in 1972, only a small number of paramedic units operated across North America. Within a few years, the profession had expanded nationwide.

After the series ended in 1977, Mantooth continued acting in television, movies, theater, and soap operas.

But his role as John Gage remained his most unforgettable—and his greatest legacy may be the real-world impact the show had on emergency medicine.

Rest in peace, Randolph Mantooth. 🇺🇸❤️
