At the Pool Party, My Daughter-in-Law Asked, “What’s It Like Being the Family Burden?”

My DIL Gave Me the Wrong Address So I’d Miss the Wedding—But My Son Left Her That Same Day

My name is Merrily Hollis, and I thought my son Gavin’s wedding would be one of the happiest days of my life.

Instead, my future daughter-in-law, Karen, handed me a handwritten note with the wedding address and said Gavin had asked her to give it to me.

I trusted her.

On the morning of the wedding, I dressed carefully and took a taxi to the address. But when we arrived, there was no wedding—only an abandoned property.

I called Gavin. No answer.

At first, I told myself it had to be a mistake. But the longer I stood there, the more I realized the truth.

Karen had deliberately sent me to the wrong place.

With help from my neighbor’s granddaughter, I searched local wedding venues until we found the right one.

When I arrived, Gavin was shocked to see me.

He took the note from my hand and immediately realized what had happened.

He confronted Karen and discovered messages showing that she had intentionally kept me away because she considered me a “distraction.”

Gavin didn’t argue.

He simply told her, “We’re not doing this.”

Then he walked away from his own wedding.

He came back to me and said, “Let’s go home.”

For a long time afterward, Gavin struggled with what had happened. But slowly, we rebuilt our relationship.

Two years later, he met Eliza.

She was completely different. She listened, respected me, and never made me feel like I didn’t belong.

When Gavin proposed, Eliza asked if they could celebrate in my backyard.

Later, at their wedding, Gavin looked at me before saying his vows.

Then he added:

“I am the man I am because of the woman who raised me.”

I thought about the wrong address Karen had given me—the one that led me into loneliness.

Then I looked around at the wedding where my seat had been saved.

Sometimes the wrong door leads you somewhere painful.

But eventually, you find the right one.

And sometimes, the right address is simply home.
