Elephants aren’t meant to live in chains — yet many, like Grandma Somboon, have suffered lifetimes of cruelty in logging and tourism.
Somboon was taken from the wild as a calf and spent over 80 years in forced labor: performing, begging, and carrying tourists. Her story is tragic, but it also shows hope.
In January, Save Elephant Foundation in Thailand rescued 87-year-old Somboon and brought her to Elephant Nature Park. She arrived in poor health — emaciated, dehydrated, and exhausted — but finally free.
Unlike most rescues who need time to adjust, Somboon immediately lay down to rest, too tired to wait. After a life on her feet, her first deep sleep was a powerful sign of trust and relief.
Though she still needs care, she’s finally safe, respected, and healing — a reminder that change is possible when compassion leads the way.
