Clare McCann, a prominent Australian actress and journalist, has shared the tragic loss of her 13-year-old son, Atreyu, who died by suicide after enduring months of severe bullying.
In an emotional Instagram post, Clare described Atreyu as “the brightest light” in her life and detailed the unbearable grief her family now faces. She revealed that Atreyu had been relentlessly bullied since starting Year 7 at South Sydney High School, including a disturbing incident where classmates allegedly tried to drown him on a school camp.
Despite repeated pleas to the school and education authorities—supported by medical and psychological documentation—Clare says no effective action was taken.
Now, Clare is leading a GoFundMe campaign to cryogenically preserve Atreyu’s body, cover medical and legal costs, and create a trust in his name. She also hopes to use any additional funds to support anti-bullying efforts and other families facing similar tragedies.
Atreyu, a budding actor with roles in TV and film, often spoke with Clare about the afterlife and their hopes for the future. “I can’t fail him now,” she said.
Using her public platform, Clare is calling for urgent reform in school bullying policies to ensure no other child suffers in silence. “This is about hope and justice,” she said, “Refusing to let my son’s story end in silence.”
Officials, including the NSW Education Minister, expressed condolences and pledged support for the school community.
