A major search is underway in Portugal as authorities make a final push to find evidence in the Madeleine McCann case, with the main suspect, Christian Brückner, potentially walking free in September.
Brückner, a 48-year-old convicted pedophile imprisoned in Germany, has broken his silence in a rare prison interview, revealing plans to flee to a country without extradition if released. He expressed frustration over being portrayed as a monster, denying both his rape conviction and any role in Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance.
Brückner described life behind bars as isolated and violent, claiming he hasn’t left his cell in weeks. His lawyer says he’s considered plastic surgery and relocation. Asked about life after prison, Brückner said he dreams of “a steak and beer.”
As his comments surfaced, German investigators launched a new search near his former Algarve home, their first major move in over two years. The operation spans 120 acres and focuses on wells and ruins.
Despite being named the prime suspect in 2020, Brückner has not been charged. He refused to answer direct questions about Madeleine in the interview and continues to deny involvement.
