When Oliver handed me $100 and told me to make Christmas “work,” I finally had enough. After years of selfishness and ridiculous demands, I decided to show him the consequences of treating his wife like an afterthought.
I had always thought I knew Oliver, my husband of ten years, but this Christmas, he outdid himself. Raising three kids as a stay-at-home mom is exhausting, but what I craved most was a supportive partner. Unfortunately, Oliver’s behavior was far from supportive.
Once, he ditched me to go to the bar while I was exhausted and needed help with our newborn. His priorities were always about what made him happy—football games, gadgets, and his own comfort—while I struggled to keep everything afloat. When we talked about finances, he dismissed my concerns, spending freely while asking me to cut back. I was doing it all on my own.
This Christmas, Oliver planned a trip to watch a football game abroad, leaving me with $100 to handle everything. I was furious, but I pretended to go along with it. I bought the cheapest food, decorations, and gifts I could find and invited both families, knowing they’d expect the usual lavish spread.
When Oliver returned, he was proud of me for “making it work,” until he saw what I’d really done. The meal was sparse, the decorations minimal, and his family was shocked. I pulled out the note he left me and exposed how little he thought of our family. Then, I presented divorce papers.
Oliver begged for another chance, but I was done. I had tried for years to make it work, and now it was time to put myself and my kids first. This Christmas marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new life.
