Trump Booed at ‘Les Misérables’ Amid Protests at Kennedy Center
On June 11, the Kennedy Center hosted Les Misérables—but the real drama unfolded offstage as Donald Trump attended the show just days before his 79th birthday, joined by Melania Trump.
“I’ve seen it many times, it’s one of my favorites,” Trump told Reuters, also declaring plans to “take back” the Kennedy Center, which he claimed had embraced too much “woke” content. Earlier this year, he fired much of its leadership and vowed “NO MORE DRAG SHOWS” on Truth Social.
In protest, some cast members boycotted the performance, and drag queens filled seats donated by Trump critics. “It was protest by taking up space,” said drag performer Tara Hoot.
The atmosphere grew tense at intermission. As Trump stood in the presidential box, an audience member shouted, “Convicted felon, rapist!” and was quickly removed. Others yelled “F**k Trump!” while supporters chanted “U.S.A!” Trump responded by pumping his fist, echoing a previous campaign rally moment.
Online reactions called his attendance “wildly ironic,” as Les Misérables is about revolt against tyranny—while Trump had recently deployed the National Guard against protesters. “Someone explain the plot to him,” tweeted Governor Gavin Newsom. Clips of the event, showing both boos and cheers, quickly went viral.
