Trump Scores $16M Legal Win Against CBS
Former President Donald Trump has won a major legal battle against media giant Paramount Global, parent of CBS, securing a $16 million settlement over an edited interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris aired on 60 Minutes.
Trump accused the network of editing Harris’s remarks to make her appear more competent during the 2020 election, calling it an attempt to sway public opinion. CBS denied wrongdoing, insisting the edits were standard and not deceptive.
Though the settlement includes no apology, it reportedly covers Trump’s legal fees and contributes to his future presidential library. Trump’s legal team called the case “historic,” saying Paramount had no choice but to settle.
The lawsuit, which initially demanded $10 billion (later raised to $20 billion), claimed CBS’s edits caused Trump emotional distress and were part of a broader bias against him.
The case gained traction amid Paramount’s merger talks with Skydance Media, raising speculation the company settled to avoid complications with FCC approval — a claim Paramount denies.
As part of the deal, 60 Minutes will release full interview transcripts with future presidential candidates, a move Trump’s team sees as a transparency win.
Fallout from the case has hit CBS, with CEO Wendy McMahon and 60 Minutes producer Bill Owens both resigning in recent months. Behind the scenes, concerns also swirled about whether the payout could be perceived as undue influence.
The settlement follows a similar recent case Trump won against ABC News. With another media win under his belt, Trump continues his campaign against what he calls the “Fake News media.”
