Mega Tsunami Threat Looms for U.S. Coastal Regions
Scientists warn that a powerful earthquake along the Cascadia subduction zone — stretching from Northern California to Vancouver Island — could trigger a devastating “mega tsunami,” threatening communities from California to Washington, as well as Alaska and Hawaii.
A new study reveals such a quake could cause land to sink up to 6½ feet, expanding floodplains and worsening tsunami impact. Experts say there’s a 15% chance of a magnitude 8.0+ quake within the next 50 years.
The Pacific Northwest faces not just shaking, but land collapse and massive waves. Alaska is increasingly at risk from landslides due to melting glaciers, while Hawaii’s volcanic activity and history of giant waves make it vulnerable too.
All of this falls within the volatile “Ring of Fire,” where major seismic activity is common. The last major Cascadia quake struck in 1700 — meaning another could be overdue.
Be prepared: Know evacuation routes, stay alert to warnings, and have an emergency plan. Experts agree — it’s not if, but when.
