The tragedy in Texas continues after the Guadalupe River turned into a deadly flash flood, killing over 110 people—including 30 children. Kerr County was hit hardest, with Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp, among the many devastated.
19-year-old Leo Romero Jr. was one of the few survivors. He lost his father, stepmother, and 2-year-old brother when their home was swept away. “I thought I was going to die,” he told KSAT, recalling the moment the house collapsed into the raging waters. He was trapped for four hours before being rescued and remains hopeful his family will be found.
President Trump signed a disaster declaration, and search efforts continue. Governor Greg Abbott said officials had prepared for possible flooding but admitted no one expected a “30-foot-high tsunami wall of water.” He cautioned against assigning blame too early.
Romero’s message to his mother, left as floodwaters rose, was simple and heartbreaking: “Te amo, mami.”
