Eric Clapton, 79, suffered a heartbreaking loss when his 4-year-old son, Conor, died in a tragic accident in 1991. Conor fell from a 53rd-floor window in New York while visiting with his mother, Italian actress Lory Del Santo. Clapton was on his way to pick him up but stopped to check a fax, arriving just moments too late.
Before the tragedy, Clapton had promised to be a better father and had taken Conor to the circus, planning more special moments like a trip to the Bronx Zoo. After Conor’s death, Clapton withdrew from the public, spending nearly a year isolated in Antigua, using music to cope.
He later co-wrote the emotional song Tears in Heaven to honor Conor. Soon after the funeral, Clapton received a letter from Conor—his first ever—written with his mother’s help and mailed just before the accident. This poignant letter added to the pain but kept Conor’s memory alive.
