“Zombie Squirrels” Spark Alarm Across the U.S.
After recent panic over “zombie rabbits,” a new warning has emerged: Americans are being urged to avoid squirrels showing alarming symptoms — oozing sores, wart-like growths, and deformed faces.
Photos and videos posted on social media show squirrels with grotesque lumps, sparking concern and confusion. One Reddit user shared a squirrel with a large facial mass, asking: “Any ideas what’s going on with this little fella?”
Experts say the cause is squirrel pox (or squirrel fibromatosis), a naturally occurring virus that’s more common than people realize. While disturbing in appearance, most squirrels survive unless the growths interfere with vital functions.
In 2023, Maine biologist Shevenell Webb urged people not to handle infected squirrels: “It’s naturally occurring and will run its course.” The disease spreads through saliva and mosquito bites, especially where squirrels gather at feeders.
From Maine to Virginia, sightings continue. Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge also warned of botfly infestations causing similar lumps, advising only trained professionals should treat them.
Online, users have dubbed the animals “zombie squirrels,” but wildlife officials stress the virus doesn’t affect humans, cats, or dogs. Though unsightly, infected squirrels often recover, as one enthusiast shared: “He beat the worst squirrel pox I’ve seen and is doing well.”
