From millionaire heartthrob to tragic end: The sad story of Brian Connolly

Posted on September 3, 2025 By admin

Brian Connolly was the charismatic frontman of glam rock band The Sweet, known for 1970s hits like Ballroom Blitz and Block Buster!. With striking looks and a powerhouse voice, he helped sell over 50 million records worldwide and became a glam rock icon.

Born in 1945 and abandoned as a baby, Brian was raised by foster parents in Scotland. He discovered later in life he was the half-brother of actor Mark McManus. Rising to fame with Sweet in the mid-‘70s, Brian embodied the era’s excess — but behind the glam, trouble brewed.

By 1979, alcoholism was affecting his health and career, leading to his exit from the band. His solo efforts struggled, and financial issues forced him to sell his house. Legal battles over the Sweet name and a series of health crises, including multiple heart attacks and partial paralysis, marked his final years.

Despite declining health, Brian continued touring with his version of Sweet. In a 1996 interview, he reflected on the toll of fame and addiction. Just three months after his final performance, he died on February 9, 1997, from kidney and liver failure, following several heart attacks.

A memorial plaque now honors the man who once electrified stadiums, but whose tragic fall remained unknown to many.
