Bruce Willis’s wife, Emma Heming, opened up about the difficult decision to move the actor into a specialized dementia care facility, a choice supported by his ex-wife Demi Moore despite public backlash.
Diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2022, the 70-year-old star’s condition forced the family to rethink their daily lives. In the ABC special Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey (aired August 26, 2025), Emma shared that their home could no longer meet Bruce’s needs. “It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” she said, explaining the move was about balancing care for Bruce with creating a supportive environment for their daughters.
She described the new facility as a warm, loving place where Bruce receives round-the-clock care, and emphasized that the family still spends meaningful time together there.
After the special aired, some online critics accused Emma of abandonment. In response, she posted on Instagram, quoting her therapist: “Everyone has an opinion, but most don’t have the experience. If that’s the case, they shouldn’t offer their two cents.”
Emma added that each dementia journey is different, and critics don’t see the reality behind closed doors.
Demi Moore publicly supported Emma in an Oprah interview, saying, “So much fell on Emma to figure this out. She’s done a masterful job.” She praised Emma’s strength and her message in The Unexpected Journey about the importance of caregivers caring for themselves.
While some questioned Demi’s involvement, many praised both women for handling a painful situation with honesty and grace. As one Reddit user put it: “This family is going through enough. Can we please stay out of their personal business?”
