Figure Skating Mourns Tragic Loss of Two Young Stars
The figure skating world is in shock following the tragic deaths of two rising stars, Julia Marie Gaiser (23) and Matilda Ferrari (15), both killed in separate road accidents in Austria and Italy.
Julia Gaiser: A Life Cut Short
Gaiser, originally from Brixen, Italy, died instantly after being struck by a truck while cycling through a junction in Austria. Despite emergency response efforts, she could not be saved. A memorial with flowers and candles now marks the scene. The truck driver tested negative for alcohol, and an investigation is ongoing.
A three-time Salzburg champion (2023–2025), Gaiser represented both Italy and Austria. Her club, EisTeam Salzburg, praised her talent, dedication, and warmth, calling her a “ray of sunshine” who inspired young skaters.
Brixen’s mayor called her a role model, and the Italian Ice Sports Federation noted her unusual path to success, having started skating later than most, yet rising quickly through relentless dedication.
Matilda Ferrari: Another Bright Future Lost
Just days later, 15-year-old Matilda Ferrari died after being hit by a truck while crossing an intersection in Giustino, Italy. Reports suggest she may have been trying to catch a bus, but the details remain under investigation.
Ferrari was a promising skater known for her resilience, having returned from injury to place third in the Coppa Italia finals. Her club remembered her as determined, passionate, and a role model—especially to her younger sister, Greta.
The back-to-back tragedies have left the skating community and their hometowns devastated, mourning two young lives lost too soon.
