Tragedy in Louisville: UPS Cargo Plane Crash Kills Seven
A UPS cargo plane erupted in flames moments after takeoff from Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday evening, killing at least seven people and leaving several missing.
UPS Flight 2976, bound for Honolulu, crashed around 5:15 p.m., just three miles south of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The plane struck several buildings, including a fuel recycling facility, sparking a massive fire fueled by 38,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Residents within five miles were ordered to shelter indoors as crews battled the blaze. Jefferson County Public Schools canceled Wednesday classes due to the ongoing emergency.
Governor Andy Beshear confirmed seven deaths, warning the toll could rise. “Please pray for the families affected,” he said on X.
At least 11 people were injured, with several still unaccounted for, including the three UPS crew members onboard. Dashcam footage showed the plane exploding after skidding off the runway, engulfing nearby buildings in flames.
By midnight, officials said the fire was mostly contained. Over 100 firefighters remain on scene as the FAA and NTSB prepare to investigate.
UPS issued a statement expressing heartbreak, pledging full cooperation with authorities and support for affected families.
