Doctors are warning about a surge in a severe cannabis-related condition known as Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), nicknamed “scromiting” because sufferers often scream while violently vomiting.
Patients experience extreme stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting that can last for days and lead to repeated emergency room visits. Standard anti-nausea medications rarely help, leaving doctors turning to unusual treatments like hot showers, capsaicin cream, or even Haldol.
The only reliable cure is completely stopping cannabis use, though many continue using and experience repeated attacks.
Researchers still don’t know why CHS affects some users and not others. A leading theory suggests overstimulation of the body’s endocannabinoid system.
Cases have risen sharply, especially among younger users. The World Health Organization officially recognized CHS in 2025, as doctors warn both teens and adults to be aware of this serious side effect.
