Many remember the strong stigma around cannabis, though views have shifted dramatically—especially in the U.S., where recreational use is now legal in 24 states. It’s no longer widely seen as the “devil’s drug,” but that doesn’t mean it’s harmless.
A growing concern is “scromiting,” a terrifying condition linked to heavy cannabis use. Known medically as Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), it causes severe nausea, nonstop vomiting, and intense stomach pain that can last for days. Doctors say standard treatments often don’t work, leaving many patients screaming in agony.
Some sufferers describe the pain as “burning” or even comparable to childbirth. Most end up in ERs repeatedly, and the only real cure is to stop using cannabis entirely, though many don’t realize the connection and fall ill again.
Studies show cases have surged, especially among young users, with adolescent CHS incidents increasing more than tenfold in recent years—even in states where cannabis remains illegal.
