Zohran Mamdani is set to be sworn in on January 1 after winning New York City’s mayoral election in a landslide, securing 50.78% of the vote. At 34, he will become the city’s youngest mayor since 1892 and its first Muslim mayor.
The race saw the highest turnout since 1993, with Mamdani’s grassroots, progressive campaign resonating strongly with young voters. He will succeed Mayor Eric Adams.
However, a historian has raised questions about whether Mamdani will officially be the city’s 111th mayor. Research by Paul Hortenstine suggests a centuries-old error in New York’s mayoral records, claiming an entire nonconsecutive mayoral term from the 1670s was mistakenly omitted.
If the error is confirmed, Mamdani would technically be sworn in as New York City’s 112th mayor. While his inauguration will still proceed, the historical numbering of his title may need correction.
