Anthony Geary, the actor best known for playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital, has died at the age of 78. ABC confirmed his passing, saying his portrayal of Luke helped define the show and daytime television.
Geary died in Amsterdam from complications following a planned surgical procedure. He starred on General Hospital from 1978 through 2015, earning eight Daytime Emmy Awards. His on-screen pairing with Genie Francis’ Laura became iconic, with their 1981 wedding drawing over 30 million viewers and even featuring a cameo by Elizabeth Taylor.
Francis paid tribute, calling Geary “a powerhouse” and “one of a kind.” Beyond Luke Spencer, he appeared on other soaps including The Young and the Restless and Bright Promise.
Geary returned briefly in 2017 and often spoke of how deeply he embodied his legendary character.
