A major food safety alert has prompted the recall of nearly 650,000 pounds of frozen tater tots due to possible contamination with small, hard plastic fragments. The recall affects thousands of bulk food-service packages distributed across 28 U.S. states, including Alaska, California, Florida, Texas, and more.
The products, produced by McCain Foods, include Ore-Ida and Sonic Tot brands. Most affected are 21,557 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots (30-pound poly bags) and 67 cases of Sonic Tots, all intended for food-service use, not retail. Use-by dates range from October 6 to November 3, 2027.
No injuries have been reported, but officials warn the plastic pieces could cause choking or dental/internal injuries. The FDA urges food-service operators to stop using affected products and discard or return them. Consumers should also check bulk frozen items received from restaurant or wholesale suppliers.
This recall underscores the importance of verifying product codes even for common freezer staples before cooking or serving.
