Why your cat headbutts you and what it means

Posted on March 3, 2026 By admin

Many cats show affection by headbutting their owners, a behavior called bunting. This is how cats mark you as part of their social group by rubbing scent glands on their face onto you, signaling trust and comfort.

Headbutting is a loving gesture similar to how wild cats like lions greet and bond with each other. It’s also related to pheromones, which help cats communicate and “claim” their favorite humans.

Not all cats enjoy close contact, so it’s important to watch your cat’s body language. If they purr or stay relaxed, the headbutt is a sign of affection. If they pull away or show discomfort, give them space.

So if your cat headbutts you, it’s usually their way of saying they trust and love you.
