Commercial fisherman Gus Sanfilippo and six others are presumed dead after their fishing vessel sank in freezing waters off the coast of Massachusetts.
Sanfilippo, crew members, and a fishery observer from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were aboard the 72-foot boat Lily Jean when the United States Coast Guard received an emergency beacon alert around 7 a.m. Rescue teams found debris, an empty life raft, and one body in the water.
Sanfilippo, a fifth-generation fisherman from Gloucester, Massachusetts, United States, worked mainly in Georges Bank and was featured in a 2012 episode of Nor’Easter Men. Officials said severe cold, rough seas, and an approaching storm made search operations extremely difficult, with the six remaining crew members still presumed dead.
